A woman, working as a teacher, was visibly emotional in court as she received her sentence for engaging in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student at her home while her husband was away. McKenna Kindred, aged 27, was found to have initiated flirtatious interactions with the student after he connected with her on social media, leading to explicit text exchanges in 2022.
Evidence presented in court revealed that Kindred had exchanged intimate messages with the student, eventually culminating in a physical relationship at her residence in Spokane, Washington, in November 2022. The encounter reportedly lasted for over three hours, followed by a shower and casual time together.
Their inappropriate relationship commenced in June of the same year, as per court records, after the student began following Kindred on Instagram, sparking the exchange of explicit content. The liaison was uncovered when a friend of the student accessed his Instagram account and discovered incriminating messages, including Kindred expressing regret when the student had to leave her room.
According to the student’s account to law enforcement, he visited Kindred’s home in the early evening, initially engaging in physical affection while watching a movie, which then progressed to sexual activity on the couch and later in Kindred’s bedroom.
Allegedly, Kindred shared provocative photos, including images of her chest, with the teenager, who reciprocated with explicit videos, as confirmed by his mother. The communication between them continued even after their sexual encounter, with exchanges referencing their physical intimacy.
Text messages revealed discussions about their relationship circulating among students, with screenshots being shared with authorities in December 2022. Additional messages from Kindred expressed desires for the student to be in her room and her enjoyment of his physical touch.
Following her arrest, Kindred admitted to engaging in sexual acts with a minor and inappropriate communication with a minor in March 2024 as part of a plea agreement. Despite this, she avoided a prison sentence, receiving two years of probation, a fine of $700 (£500), and a requirement to register as a sex offender for a decade. In court, she expressed remorse for her actions, acknowledging the distress caused to those involved and the consequences on her personal and professional life.
Despite the legal proceedings, Kindred’s husband, Kyle, remained supportive. The couple relocated from their apartment in Liberty Lake after Kindred’s arrest, residing at Kyle’s parents’ home and later moving to Idaho, where they purchased a house valued at $498,000 (£360,000) in June 2024.
It remains uncertain if Kindred has resumed her teaching career after voluntarily surrendering her teaching license due to an investigation by the Idaho Standards Commission.
