An urgent warning has been issued to all Android and iPhone users regarding the use of unofficial chargers, emphasizing the significant safety risks involved. With the trend of new devices being sold without chargers, consumers are often tempted to opt for cheaper alternatives available online, such as on Amazon, priced at under £8, compared to official branded chargers costing at least £20.
Consumer watchdog Which? conducted an investigation, purchasing chargers from various online marketplaces including Amazon, AliExpress, B&Q Marketplace, Debenhams Marketplace, and eBay. Shockingly, the tests revealed that nine chargers posed a risk of electric shock due to substandard manufacturing, while eight were identified as potential fire or explosion hazards.
One counterfeit charger closely resembling an Apple USB-C 35W Power Adapter was particularly concerning. Despite the product’s packaging displaying Apple branding and being priced at £11.99, it failed safety tests, highlighting the dangers of counterfeit products in the market.
Further scrutiny uncovered chargers lacking essential UK safety markings and devices with poorly designed internal circuitry, increasing the likelihood of overheating, fire outbreaks, or explosions. This investigation by Which? underscores the persistent issue of unsafe electrical products being sold through online platforms.
Sue Davies, Head of Consumer Protection Policy at Which?, emphasized the severe consequences poorly designed electrical products can have, advocating for stronger product safety laws and clear obligations for online marketplaces to ensure consumer safety.
Responding to the concerns, Amazon reiterated its commitment to customer safety and collaboration with Electrical Safety First to promote safe charging practices. The company assured that products on its platform adhere to laws and regulations, and any identified risky chargers have been removed. B&Q also emphasized its dedication to product safety and proactive measures to ensure recalled items are not available on its Marketplace.
To safeguard consumers, experts advise purchasing chargers only from official retailers or trusted brands like Apple, Belkin, Anker, and Samsung, despite the higher upfront cost. While cheaper alternatives may seem appealing, the potential safety hazards associated with unofficial chargers outweigh any cost savings.
