New cautionary signs specifically aimed at British vacationers have been installed in Tenerife. The Spanish island, located near the West African coast and renowned for its consistent sunny climate, is a popular destination among UK citizens. The Canary Islands, as a whole, experienced a remarkable surge in tourism in 2024, attracting nearly 18 million visitors, marking a 10% annual increase.
Tenerife, in particular, drew over 6.2 million international tourists and more than 900,000 local visitors, with British tourists dominating the scene, accounting for 2.8 million visitors in 2024 – three times the number from Germany.
Despite Tenerife’s appealing features such as warm January temperatures exceeding 20 degrees Celsius, extensive sandy beaches, and affordable bars, the island has a downside. Travelers may fall victim to pickpockets and muggers.
Presently, British tourists planning to visit popular spots in Tenerife are being cautioned about pickpocketing due to a rise in muggings and thefts. New signs have been deployed on sidewalks to alert visitors to the risks, with messages disseminated to hundreds of thousands of social media users.
The alerts are directed at favored locations in southern Tenerife, including Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas, Puerto Colón, Puerto Santiago, and Los Gigantes. Various Facebook groups are now utilized to report such incidents, sharing images of suspected pickpockets and pinpointing high-risk areas.
While official statistics are lacking, there are anecdotal indications of an uptick in thefts in specific Tenerife areas. One notable hotspot is the vicinity of English pubs in Los Cristianos, particularly San Francisco Avenue, recognized as a high-risk zone, particularly at night and during peak visitor periods.
A recent incident shared on a Facebook group described a successful intervention by a user’s husband who thwarted two pickpockets in Los Cristianos attempting to steal a woman’s purse. Other reports mention stolen cell phones, hotel room keys, and wallets.
Some car rental companies in the southern region have started incorporating precautionary warnings for their customers. These companies advise customers to adopt practices that reduce theft risks, such as not leaving phones unattended on tables, avoiding carrying large sums of cash in wallets, and opting for minimal cash and essential cards only.
They also recommend using fanny packs, carrying bags in front of the body, and refraining from leaving valuables in vehicles.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, reported crime rates in the Canary Islands rose by 3.3% in a nine-month period compared to the same timeframe in 2024. The archipelago recorded 83,358 criminal offenses in the initial nine months of the year, up from 80,707 in the corresponding period in 2024.
The report highlighted a notable surge in property-related crimes, with 1,467 violent robberies (+12.8%) and 21,889 thefts (+3.5%), as reported by Tenerife Weekly.
