A chief constable has decided to deactivate her social media accounts due to receiving rape threats and abusive messages online. Vanessa Jardine from Northumbria Police shared how she became a target because of her role as the national lead on LGBT+ matters. Following a rape threat, she opted to step back from social media and enhance security measures for her family.
During an exclusive interview with the Mirror, Jardine revealed her experiences with online trolls for the first time. She also discussed her innovative plans involving AI technology and a new multi-million pound computer system aimed at aiding law enforcement in apprehending criminals.
Aside from her professional duties, she is actively involved in promoting girls’ participation in football from underprivileged areas in collaboration with Newcastle Utd. Jardine emphasized the importance of inclusivity, stating that everyone deserves the freedom to live authentically.
In 2022, she publicly addressed her own sexuality in a blog post, highlighting her journey from being in the closet to embracing her identity with the support of loved ones. She expressed pride in her role as the national LGBT lead for chief officers and emphasized the need for societal acceptance and respect for individuals’ differences.
Concerned about the toxic environment on social media, Jardine emphasized the prevalence of harmful online behavior and the need for more positive interactions. Due to the threats she received, security measures were reassessed for herself and her family members.
Returning to her role after participating in the ‘retire and rehire’ scheme, Jardine is focused on implementing a new advanced NICHE computer system to enhance law enforcement capabilities. She highlighted the potential of Artificial Intelligence, including the use of drones and robots for operational efficiency.
Furthermore, Jardine’s efforts extend to supporting women’s football by aiming to lead England’s women police team in a tournament and encouraging former female footballers to consider a career in policing post-retirement. Collaborating with professional clubs, she aims to provide more opportunities for girls from disadvantaged backgrounds to engage in football activities.
