A recent pantomime show, referred to as the “Willy Wonka Experience 2.0,” faced criticism as families left during the performance. The production, titled ‘The Wicked Wizard of Oz: Cirque Spectacular,’ received complaints after a show at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro over the weekend. Disappointed attendees voiced their dissatisfaction, with some seeking refunds and others expressing that they have seen better school productions.
Following the disappointing experience, a Facebook group named ‘The Woeful Wicked Wizard of Oz – A Not-So Cirque Spectacular’ was created and has garnered over 1,500 members. The production company, World’s Biggest Productions, had promoted the show as a blend of pantomime and Cirque du Soleil, but parents who attended the shows described it as inappropriate, overpriced, and misleading.
One parent, who spent £297 for their family to attend, remarked that the show fell short compared to the Willy Wonka Experience. Attendees criticized the lack of a coherent storyline, poor sound quality, and subpar props and production elements, such as a witch on a bike attached to a golf cart and munchkins on stilts.
The discontent spread beyond the live performances, with hundreds of spectators nationwide sharing their disappointment on the Facebook page created by an attendee from a show in Brighton. Comments ranged from calling the show “disgusting” to labeling it as a “shocking” performance.
In response to the backlash, a spokesperson from The World’s Biggest Productions defended the show, emphasizing that the promotional materials accurately portrayed the nature of the performance as a mix of pantomime and circus elements. The company highlighted the talented circus cast and clarified that the show’s comedic elements are in line with traditional pantomime humor.
The Mirror has reached out to World’s Biggest Productions for their comments on the situation.
