The issue typically originates from the router – the small, blinking device that ensures connectivity within your home. Like other electronic gadgets such as smartphones and laptops, routers can experience performance issues when exposed to excessive heat. In an effort to highlight the risks, leading UK internet provider Virgin Media stated, “Although we rigorously test our Hubs under various temperature conditions, they are best kept away from direct sunlight, just like your phone or laptop. If the Hub becomes too hot, it could slow down your connection or cease functioning altogether.”
Simply being in a warm room is usually not a concern, as most modern routers are engineered to withstand typical summer temperatures. Nevertheless, placing your router on a windowsill or in a spot exposed to direct sunlight can push it beyond its optimal operating range. Think of it as protecting your body from sunburn by seeking shade when necessary.
When overheated, your broadband speeds may decrease, and the router may temporarily power off until it cools down.
The initial step is to relocate the router away from direct sunlight, but positioning is also crucial in other aspects. While concealing your router in a cabinet or enclosed space might seem neat, poor ventilation can hamper Wi-Fi performance.
Virgin Media emphasized, “Proper placement of the Hub can also enhance Wi-Fi coverage. Avoid stashing the Hub in a cabinet or hiding it behind your TV.”
For optimal connectivity, place your router in an open area, ideally elevated off the floor and positioned centrally within your residence. Additionally, ensure it is kept away from devices that could cause interference, such as cordless phones, baby monitors, and microwave ovens.
Lastly, avoid situating your router near a fish tank, as the water can disrupt Wi-Fi signals, impeding seamless connectivity throughout your home.
By implementing a few straightforward adjustments, you can safeguard your broadband and maintain a smooth internet experience, even during soaring temperatures.
