A woman, Lauren Smy, expressed that her brother’s tragic drowning at a popular beach in Thailand could have been prevented if the lifeguard present had received proper training. Jason Lambert, 37, lost his life after being swept away by a rip current at Freedom Beach in Phuket on November 29. Smy recounted the distressing incident where Lambert, along with seven others, including herself, got caught in the current within moments. Despite rescue efforts by the public and CPR performed on Lambert, he was declared dead after being taken to Patong Hospital.
According to Smy, the lifeguard’s inability to swim hindered the rescue process, leading to delays and ineffective assistance. She emphasized the importance of lifeguards being trained to handle water emergencies promptly and efficiently. Smy criticized the lack of necessary skills demonstrated by the lifeguard on duty, stressing the need for immediate action in such critical situations. Additionally, she highlighted the chaos and confusion she experienced during the rescue attempt, pointing out the lifeguard’s inappropriate behavior of recording the incident instead of providing aid.
Lambert, a father of four and a bouncer from Colchester, was on a family trip to Asia when the tragedy occurred. The UK coroner ruled his death as accidental, but Smy firmly believes that the lifeguard’s inadequate training played a significant role in the outcome. Eyewitnesses and authorities corroborated the sequence of events, confirming the swift actions taken by beachgoers to assist those in distress. Despite the efforts made by bystanders, Lambert could not be revived, underscoring the importance of well-trained lifeguards in ensuring beach safety.
