Russia launched a massive aerial assault on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, and its surrounding areas during the night, using missiles and drones, resulting in the deaths of at least 16 individuals, as confirmed by officials on Thursday. The attack, which included ballistic missile strikes, exploited Ukraine’s lack of Patriot air defense interceptors, the only defense system capable of intercepting such missiles in the country’s arsenal.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urgently appealed for more Patriot interceptors from other countries, but global supplies are limited due to ongoing conflicts and Ukraine’s prolonged battle against Russia’s invasion. The overnight assault by Russia also involved cruise missiles and high-speed jet-powered drones, adding pressure on Ukraine’s air defenses.
The attack primarily targeted Kyiv but impacted 28 locations across Ukraine, causing around 40 injuries. Zelenskyy described the assault as a well-planned and coordinated effort by Russia involving different types of missiles and drones to inflict maximum damage on civilian infrastructure.
In response to the attack, neighboring countries and allies scrambled jets and activated military measures to safeguard their territories. The Russian Defence Ministry claimed that the strike targeted an industrial site in Kyiv producing components for Ukraine’s Flamingo cruise missiles, along with other strategic locations.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s efforts to acquire missile defense systems face challenges, with the U.S. Patriot inventory decreasing significantly. Production of interceptors by Lockheed Martin is ongoing, but closing the gap will take time. The political landscape in Washington regarding providing Patriots to Ukraine has also been uncertain.
Residential areas in Kyiv were hit during the assault, causing destruction to buildings and trapping residents under rubble. Emergency teams rescued people from the affected areas, while individuals recounted harrowing experiences of the attack. Ukraine has retaliated by targeting Russian oil facilities through drone strikes, leading to a back-and-forth exchange of attacks between the two countries.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to escalate, with both sides struggling for control along the front line. The use of drones and missiles has become a key tactic, intensifying the warfare and posing challenges for both armies.
