Sainsbury’s has decided to discontinue its Chop Chop rapid delivery app and merge its functionality into the main Sainsbury’s app. Launched in 2016, Chop Chop aimed to provide grocery delivery within 60 minutes at a premium price and was operational in 50 Sainsbury’s stores. The standalone Chop Chop app has now been removed, and users attempting to download it are redirected to the primary Sainsbury’s app.
Jim Banks, Sainsbury’s head of experience design, explained that the integration was done to simplify the shopping experience for customers. He expressed this change on LinkedIn, stating, “Chop Chop is dead. Long live Chop Chop! We’ve officially decommissioned the standalone Chop Chop app and brought it into the Sainsbury’s shopping app because customers shouldn’t have to think about which app to use.”
Banks praised the collaborative effort of teams in experience design, product, and engineering for making this transition possible. He emphasized that this move significantly streamlines the shopping ecosystem, enhancing convenience and humanizing the shopping experience.
Chop Chop faced competition from Tesco’s Whoosh rapid delivery service, which promises deliveries in as little as 20 minutes. In other supermarket news in the UK, Co-op has announced the launch of 18 new or upgraded stores in the first quarter of 2026. The initial store, set to open in the Willowbrook Park neighborhood in Didcot, Oxfordshire, marks the beginning of this expansion.
Additionally, Co-op plans to reopen several stores after renovation, including locations in Eastern Green, Coventry, and Ealing, London. Kate McCrae, Co-op Operations Director, emphasized the company’s focus on creating community-centric stores that cater to local needs and contribute to the community’s well-being.
Moreover, Co-op has committed £70 million through its Levy Share service to create 7,000 new apprenticeships by 2030, indicating a significant investment in workforce development. This initiative aligns with the company’s strategy to enhance its presence and offerings across various UK high streets and communities.
