U.S. Army Unit Offers Extra Time Off for Troops Who Re-Enlist Ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI Release
Soldiers in the 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia, have the opportunity to earn a special incentive for re-enlisting soon. The battalion’s leaders believe that granting additional leave around the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, a popular video game known for its action-packed gameplay, could entice some servicemen and women to extend their military contracts.
Scheduled for release on November 19, Grand Theft Auto VI is anticipated to be a major entertainment event of the year. Take-Two Interactive, the game’s publisher, has reported unprecedented pre-order demand, according to CEO Strauss Zelnick.
The innovative retention strategy was conceived by a career counselor within the battalion, in collaboration with unit commanders. Lt. Col. Angel Tomko, a spokesperson for Fort Stewart, shared that the initiative was designed to align with soldiers’ interests and prompt them to consider their re-enlistment timelines.
In a memo circulated to troops, battalion leaders outlined that soldiers who recommit by November 14 will be rewarded with a four-day pass tailored to coincide with the release of Grand Theft Auto VI. Lt. Col. Ryan Hodgson, the battalion commander, emphasized the unique nature of the special leave offer.
Confirmed by Tomko, the memo, dated July 28, has garnered interest from approximately 20 out of 130 eligible soldiers. To qualify for the bonus, individuals must commit to serving a minimum of two additional years in uniform.
Anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI has been growing since 2023, particularly following the release of its debut cinematic trailer, which hinted at a return to Vice City, a fictional representation of Miami, and an expanded gaming environment encompassing various Florida settings, including alligator-infested swamps.
The excitement surrounding the game was further elevated when Rockstar Games, the developer, announced plans to reveal gameplay footage on Netflix. However, this unveiling was expedited due to hackers leaking purported gameplay content online earlier this week.
