Despite a range of unexpected moments that featured shoutouts to Canada, multiple references to Law & Order, and appearances by Taylor Swift, the most surprising outcome of the evening was the recipients of the prestigious awards.
While the Emmys typically recognize shows and actors with longer runs, the top honors went to Apple TV’s hit series Widow’s Bay. The horror-comedy swept the awards, winning in categories such as lead actor, supporting actress, supporting actor, and director. It also clinched the coveted best comedy series award, securing a total of 14 wins out of 19 nominations, surpassing The Studio‘s previous single-season record of 13 wins.
Despite leading the nominations with 25 nods, The Pitt claimed the best drama series award and several supporting actress trophies. However, its lead actor Noah Wyle lost out on the best supporting actor category to Tom Pelphrey from Tasks. Another unexpected win was in the best supporting actress in a comedy category, where The Diplomat‘s Allison Janney triumphed over The Pitt‘s nominees.
The awards night also featured comedic moments, such as host Mariska Hargitay’s recreation of Law & Order scenes with guest appearances by stars like Ice-T and Taylor Swift. Speaking in a pre-taped sketch, Swift joked about her potential appearance at the Emmys, adding to the light-hearted atmosphere.
In a heartfelt moment, Sally Field expressed gratitude upon winning outstanding lead actress for Remarkably Bright Creatures, filming in Deep Cove, B.C., and giving a special shoutout to Canada. The ceremony also included a touching tribute to the late Catherine O’Hara by her colleagues.
Michael J. Fox received the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, acknowledging his contributions to Parkinson’s disease awareness. Another standout was Hacks, which garnered 24 nominations and saw Jean Smart winning best actress in a comedy category, while Kate O’Flynn won best supporting actress for Widow’s Bay.
Pluribus, a new series by Vince Gilligan, received 18 nominations and featured Rhea Seehorn winning her first Emmy for outstanding lead actress. The awards night saw a mix of expected wins and surprising upsets, showcasing both established favorites and emerging stars in the entertainment industry.
