Rachel Reeves, the Labour MP for Leeds West and Pudsey, has made a commitment to inject significant funding into the transformation of Britain’s railways, accusing the Tories and Reform of aiming to withdraw £45 billion from the North. During a press conference in Leeds, Reeves announced additional funding for the Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) project, emphasizing the government’s determination to bring tangible improvements to people’s journeys and communities promptly. She criticized the Tories for their failure to support the North over the past 14 years.
Reeves expressed a personal connection to the decision to enhance transportation infrastructure, stating that she is committed to backing up promises with substantial financial investments. She highlighted the importance of financial backing in railway development and emphasized the government’s economic plan to stimulate growth across the country, create quality jobs, increase wages, and enhance living standards for working individuals.
The initial phase of the NPR project will focus on enhancing connections on existing rail lines between Sheffield and Leeds, Leeds and York, and Leeds and Bradford. Subsequent phases will introduce a new route between Liverpool and Manchester via Manchester airport and Warrington, utilizing a mix of new and existing rail lines. The final phase will concentrate on improving connections eastwards from Manchester to Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, and York.
Reeves also criticized Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch, suggesting that both would neglect the needs of the North. She emphasized the Labour Party’s commitment to investing in NPR and linking towns and cities for the greater good. Additionally, she pledged further financial support, indicating that more funding could be expected at the upcoming spending review to ensure the project’s timely completion in the early 2030s.
