I recently unveiled a significant investment in Northern rail, in collaboration with local leaders, marking the most substantial funding in Northern rail infrastructure in a generation.
The introduction of Northern Powerhouse Rail will revolutionize travel by enhancing connectivity among key cities such as Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, and York with quicker and more frequent services that extend to Newcastle, Hull, and beyond.
Currently, residents in Liverpool are limited to just two fast trains per hour to Manchester, with a lengthy journey of up to an hour and 25 minutes to reach Manchester Airport, a mere 28 miles away.
Meanwhile, individuals in Leeds face challenges as the largest city in Western Europe without adequate mass transit, where only a third of the population can reach the city center within 30 minutes.
These issues are not just inconveniences but barriers to economic growth, impacting job opportunities, businesses, and families across the North. The proposed investment aims to alleviate these challenges with faster commutes, improved connections, and more quality time with family as opposed to waiting on platforms. This initiative complements our previous efforts, such as freezing rail fares for the first time in three decades and maintaining the £3 bus fare cap to stretch the budget of our readers.
By effectively linking our prominent Northern cities, we unlock their economic potential, from Manchester’s flourishing tech sector and Leeds’ financial services hub to Sheffield’s advanced manufacturing and Liverpool’s expertise in life sciences, not forgetting Newcastle and the North East’s leading position in clean energy.
Bringing productivity in the North up to the national average could inject an additional £40 billion annually into our economy, resulting in increased funding for essential services like schools, hospitals, and public amenities.
While past governments have discussed the concept of “levelling up” the North, tangible progress was lacking as transport systems faltered, infrastructure deteriorated, and young people were compelled to seek employment elsewhere.
Recognizing the broken trust from previous unkept promises, we are dedicated to fulfilling our commitments by investing substantially in the North’s rail network. Just as the North led the industrial railway revolution, we are now leading the modernization of the North’s rail infrastructure. Our focus is on delivering tangible results without further neglect or broken pledges, ensuring that this Government stands by the people.
