The father of the owner of a Swiss bar where 40 individuals lost their lives in a New Year’s fire has expressed that his son holds accountability for the tragic incident. Jacques Moretti’s father, Jean, made this statement as his son and daughter-in-law faced charges of manslaughter by negligence, bodily harm by negligence, and arson by negligence.
Mr. Moretti Snr acknowledged his son’s responsibility as the owner of the establishment but emphasized that guilt is yet to be determined. He highlighted their commitment to facing the justice system transparently and not evading responsibility. Jean described Jacques as a diligent worker deeply impacted by the fire, noting that their residence is now under police protection due to escalating public outrage over the catastrophe that also resulted in 116 injuries.
Speaking to newspaper 24 Heures, Jean mentioned that Jacques is profoundly affected by the incident, underscoring that the family is devastated by the tragedy. Jacques was placed in pre-trial detention following questioning by prosecutors, while his wife, Jessica, was interviewed and subsequently released.
On a national day of mourning in Switzerland, Mrs. Moretti expressed sorrow for the victims and individuals affected by the tragedy, apologizing for the devastating events that occurred at their establishment. The investigation revealed that the fire likely originated in the bar’s basement, suggesting that champagne bottles with attached party sparklers ignited highly flammable foam, triggering a catastrophic blaze.
Authorities are examining the accountability of both the bar owners and officials, acknowledging the absence of fire safety inspections at the bar since 2019. The incident involved victims from 19 different nationalities, with 83 individuals remaining hospitalized.
