Young survivors of the tragic New Year fire incident in Switzerland delivered heartfelt speeches at an official memorial ceremony, bringing French President Emmanuel Macron to tears.
Marie Albrecht, Aline Morisoli, and Solal Heimendinger, who were present during the devastating event, shared their experiences on stage at the ceremony held at the “Le Régent” convention center in Martigny, Switzerland, in front of approximately 1,000 attendees, including relatives of the deceased, first responders, and dignitaries.
The memorial took place as part of a national day of mourning, nine days after a fire at Le Constellation bar in the Crans-Montana ski resort resulted in the tragic loss of 40 lives, including 20 children, and left 116 individuals injured. The victims included teenagers as young as 14 and two siblings.
During her speech, Marie Albrecht expressed deep emotions, recounting the horror they witnessed at the bar that fateful evening. Aline Morisoli highlighted the challenges faced by their generation but emphasized resilience and the pursuit of a better world. Solal Heimendinger thanked the emergency services and hospital staff, acknowledging their crucial role in the aftermath of the tragedy.
The service, attended by mourners and broadcast live, featured tributes and moments of silence in honor of the victims. Officials, including President of the Valais State Council Mathias Reynard and Federal President Guy Parmelin, expressed condolences and solidarity with the affected families.
Following the incident, the bar owners, Jacques Moretti and his wife Jessica, faced legal proceedings on charges of negligence leading to manslaughter, bodily harm, and arson. The ongoing investigation is looking into the circumstances that contributed to the fire, including potential lapses in fire safety inspections.
