United States President Donald Trump has announced his intention to impose a substantial tariff on Canada amidst their trade dispute. Trump revealed on Truth Social that a 50% tariff will be applied to all aircraft sold to the US from Canada due to the latter’s refusal to certify several Gulfstream jets.
This tariff threat follows a previous warning to impose a 100% tariff on goods imported from Canada if the country proceeds with a proposed trade agreement with China. Trump’s recent statement on Truth Social accused Canada of wrongfully withholding certification for Gulfstream 500, 600, 700, and 800 Jets.
Furthermore, Trump stated that the US will decertify Canada’s Bombardier Global Express aircraft until Canada certifies America’s Gulfstream models. He alleged that Canada is impeding Gulfstream product sales in its territory through the certification process.
Trump emphasized that unless the situation is rectified promptly, a 50% tariff will be enforced on all aircraft sold by Canada to the United States. Notably, industry expert Richard Aboulafia pointed out that previous administrations have never directly decertified jets, stressing that using aircraft safety as a bargaining tool in a trade dispute is ill-advised. This move signifies the latest development in the ongoing conflict between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
