Ben McKenzie, known for his role as Ryan Atwood in the popular teen drama “The O.C.,” has shifted his focus from Hollywood to what he refers to as the “largest Ponzi scheme in history” – cryptocurrency.
In his new documentary titled “Everyone Is Lying to You for Money,” McKenzie delves into the world of cryptocurrency, highlighting a common pattern where a select few insiders rake in huge profits while most regular investors end up losing money. Despite initially being drawn to cryptocurrency by a friend’s recommendation, McKenzie, armed with an economics degree, soon uncovered what he describes as the deceptive nature of the industry.
In 2022, McKenzie testified before a U.S. Senate committee on cryptocurrency and co-authored a book titled “Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud.” While some industry figures have criticized McKenzie’s documentary for sensationalizing negative narratives surrounding cryptocurrency, McKenzie advocates for stricter regulations to safeguard investors.
In a conversation with guest host Lyndsay Duncombe on “The Current,” McKenzie elaborated on the harmful impact of cryptocurrency on men, emphasizing how the allure of wealth creation without effort and government intervention often lures individuals into risky investments. He points out that while some individuals have profited significantly from cryptocurrency, many others have fallen victim to manipulation and fraud due to the lack of regulation in the industry.
Despite encountering individuals who have suffered substantial losses in various cryptocurrencies, McKenzie found it surprising that they still expressed faith in the digital assets. He attributes this persistence to the sunk-cost fallacy, where individuals feel compelled to continue investing to justify their past losses rather than admitting defeat. McKenzie underscores the societal failure in providing a secure financial environment that discourages the need for risky speculation like cryptocurrency.
Overall, McKenzie emphasizes that while cryptocurrency critiques the flaws of the traditional financial system, it poses even greater risks to investors due to its unregulated nature. He warns that despite the criticisms of the current financial system, cryptocurrency is not a viable alternative but a more perilous option that investors should approach with caution.
